Quality gets treated as something you inspect for at the end, after the work is done. That is backwards, and expensive. Real quality excellence is a proactive system that catches problems at the source and fixes them so they never come back. I have built these systems for businesses, nonprofits, and associations, and the shift from reactive to proactive is where the gains live.
What is quality excellence?
Quality excellence is the discipline of surfacing problems the moment they occur, addressing root causes rather than symptoms, and improving continuously so the same issue does not recur. It is built into how the work runs, not bolted on at the end as an inspection.
Principle one: capture problems at the source, and act
You cannot improve quality you cannot see. The first principle is an always-on way for the people doing the work to flag problems and ideas immediately, with a visible response. The response part is not optional.
Traditional suggestion systems do not work because your people see there is great fanfare and little follow-through. Suggest-Hub helps ensure you take corrective action. Michael S. Kramer
This is Suggest-Hub in the ManageHub system. Where it goes wrong: organizations collect input and let it disappear, which trains people to stop reporting. Capture plus visible corrective action is what builds a quality culture.
Principle two: fix the root cause so it never recurs
Reactive organizations fix the same problem over and over. Quality excellence means fixing it once, at the root, so that version of the problem is gone for good.
React proactively. This means you identify the problem and fix it so it can never happen again. Michael S. Kramer
Often a handful of root causes drive most of the recurring pain. Solve those holistically, across departments rather than in silos, and the quality of everything downstream improves at once. That is far more powerful than inspecting defects one at a time.
Principle three: build it on a real standard
These principles are the heart of the Baldrige Excellence Framework, the U.S. standard of management excellence run by NIST. Baldrige treats quality as a property of your whole management system, not just your product, which is why its award winners have historically outperformed the S&P 500 by roughly four to one. Install the listening, fix root causes, and keep improving as a living document. That is quality excellence you can sustain.
